Clifton No. 3 - Smoothing Plane

The Clifton No. 3 is a finishing plane designed for precision work, ideal for producing clean, uniform surfaces on wood. With a 44 mm iron width, it is particularly suitable for final smoothing and fine finishing work.

Made in England, this plane combines robust construction with precision-machined components. It is designed for immediate performance, ready to work practically out of the box, although it is common for woodworkers to prefer sharpening the iron themselves before use.

Designed for demanding woodworkers, both professionals and advanced amateurs, the Clifton No. 3 offers great cutting control and allows for the removal of extremely fine chips, even in the most difficult woods.

Construction and materials

The body and frog are made of high-quality gray cast iron, fully machined, with precision-ground sole and sides. This construction ensures stability and a smooth glide over the wood.

The rear handle and front button are made of carefully shaped, sanded, and sealed walnut, providing comfort and control during work.

The cutting iron is made of cryogenically treated O1 steel, hardened to 60-62 HRC. Approximately 3 mm thick, it offers great rigidity and stability during cutting. The counter-iron utilizes a one-piece design that ensures a firm and effective clamping.

Various components are manufactured from polished brass and polished stainless steel, including screws, adjustment wheel, and other mechanical elements, ensuring durability and smooth operation.

BEDROCK System

Clifton uses a system based on the Bedrock design, known for its superior stability. In this system, the frog sits on a fully machined surface of the planer body, creating a solid base for the cutting iron.

This design significantly increases the rigidity of the assembly, allowing for extremely controlled cuts and reducing vibrations.

Another advantage of the Bedrock system is that it allows you to adjust the planer jaw opening without disassembling the iron assembly , facilitating quick adjustments according to the type of wood or the desired finish.
