Clifton 400 – Shoulder Plane

Description

The Clifton 400 is a compact shoulder planer designed for high-precision joinery and detail work. Its small size allows for controlled work in small areas, making it ideal for adjusting joinery shoulders, recesses, and other delicate tasks.

This plane has a fine opening, allowing you to remove very light and controlled chips — a feature particularly appreciated by carpenters and furniture makers seeking maximum precision in finishing.

Manufactured in Sheffield by Thomas Flinn & Co. under the Clifton brand, it adheres to the high quality standards associated with Clifton tools.

Construction

The body is made of high-quality gray cast iron, carefully machined, with precision-ground sole and sides to ensure stability and cutting accuracy.

The iron rests on machined surfaces on the planer body, fitting perfectly into the tool's structure. It is secured using a wooden wedge, following the traditional method.

The iron adjustment is done manually, through small touches on the iron and the wedge, allowing for extremely fine adjustment of the cutting depth.

The planer features a Bright Ground finish, characteristic of Clifton precision tools.
